Ciphent CEO Featured in eWeek

Ciphent's CEO, James C. Foster, was featured in a recent eWeek Europe article regarding Google's WiFi privacy fiasco. In 2002, Foster took reporter Larry Walsh "war driving" for the first time to show him the vast amount of small businesses that are currently operating with open access points leaving their private corporate and client information available to anyone. To test these businesses, Foster chose Kendall Square in Cambridge, Mass., a street which is lined with a number of organizations such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Forrester Research, all of which should have secured WiFi. As they drove through the streets of Cambridge, Foster’s laptop lit up displaying numerous signals from open APs.

Although wireless security has matured over the years, individuals and small businesses are still vulnerable due to the lack of skill or wherewithal to secure their systems. It’s these issues that put Google in the hot seat today. They remain under increasing pressure from government authorities around the world for violating the privacy of Web users. Reports show that Google collected private data from potentially millions of Web users when their StreetView vehicles passed through residential neighborhoods. Although the outcome of these investigations is still pending, this should open the eyes to many small business owners and persuade them to close their WiFi security.
