Linthicum Heights, MD. November 2007. Ciphent is pleased to announce the unveiling of PressboxPreps.com, which was released on September 15, 2007. Ciphent built the public site from scratch using a combination of back-end functionality and front end design. In addition to being driven by integrated video, photos, and professional news articles, the site features user-generated content such as user-generated comments and user-submitted photographs.

PressBox, a free weekly sports newspaper in the Baltimore metropolitan area, provides comprehensive coverage of local sports news, from high school to college to professional leagues. PressBox includes regular features, in-depth profiles on local sports figures, guest columnists, useful local recreational league news, and much more. The company, who implements a 3-pronged multimedia approach – radio, print, and web – wanted to expand its web presence by creating a high school sports site focusing on the Baltimore area first, with the possibility for future expansion into other regions.

For PressBox, time was of the essence. The website’s September 15th launch date was strategically planned; local schools started fall session in early September, and the NFL began their season on September 6. PressBox needed a team who could build a superior quality public site from scratch on time and within budget. For these reasons, they called Ciphent.

In order to accomplish this task, Ciphent first educated PressBox about how a more sophisticated approach could provide them with a mechanism for growth in their business model. Consequently, Ciphent suggested using an open source ad-serving technology which would allow for additional advertising revenues as site traffic grows. Ultimately, Ciphent employed an open source content management system as its technology platform, which saved Press Box $10,000 in relation to competing offers using proprietary content management systems, enabling PressBox with more functionality for less money.
