This course will begin by quickly discussing the fundamentals of secure software development in respect to the last and current threats against distributed software applications. We will build upon this knowledge as we dive into the COBOL language specific threats, common mistakes, and secure development techniques. The overarching goal for this class is to educate all students on Secure Development and Testing techniques for COBOL development environments. Both the IBM and HP development environments will be covered; however, the emphasis will be on the IBM platform. Students will be provided with all materials and the goal for every Secure Development course is to spend at least 60% of the class time programming with hands-on examples.

An understanding of COBOL and programming methodologies and design techniques are required for this course. While it is not required, a basic understanding of secure development practices, application hacking techniques, and general information security concepts are welcomed.
